The English Holly has shiny, thick dark green leaves with fragrant white flowers. Produces small red berries. Commonly used as a holiday decoration. Native to Europe and northern Africa. This small ornamental tree provides interest in a winter garden.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the English Holly has a moderate growth rate. It grows up to 35 feet in height and 20 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 10. This is a hardy, tough and adaptable tree.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 12 hours
Stratification: Warm stratify for 60 days, cold stratify for 60 days
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed.
Other: seedlings need shade for their first year, sporadic germination will occur over a 2-3 year period
