A California native, the Santa Lucia Fir is a popular ornamental conifer and can be seen in many arboreta. Symmetrical and tight in its habit often looking like a sheared light-green Christmas tree. It is said to be the rarest fir in the world and is endemic to California's Santa Lucia Mountains. Grows slowly: only 3 to 4 ft. in 6 to 7 years.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 30 days
Germination: Seed may start to germinate in cold strat., sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
Other: Fall sowing in mulched beds is often prefered to artificial strat and spring sowing.
