The Common Hackberry is similar to the elm, but often considered superior. Spreading crown, red-orange berries. It has gray bark with corky ridges. Good for attracting wildlife and is a good choice for hanging a swing. Beautiful yellow fall colour.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Common Hackberry has a moderate to fast growth rate. It grows up to 75 feet in height and 50 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 2 to 9. Tolerates heat, drought and pollution but prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
