Scientific Name: Fagus grandifolia
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 60 ft
Spread: 60 ft
Form: irregular
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches
Comments
This large tree is naturally low-branched with attractive glossy green
leaves. In the fall, the leaves turn bronze but weather to a light tan
color. Some leaves are held late into the winter if not blown off by the
wind. The smooth gray bark is ornamental. The tree needs an acid soil
and is difficult to transplant. Dense shade and low branching will wreak
havoc on lawn grasses growing beneath the tree.
