General Care Tips Fishtail Palms grow in a variety of sun and shade conditions. Trees tolerate a variety of well-drained, fertile soils. Prune sparingly but remove a stem after it flowers. Avoid damaging lower trunk and roots. Things to Watch For Insect pests include red spider mites and scales. The Fishtail palm is very vulnerable to lethal yellowing disease.
