Acer palmatum 'Aka shigitatsu sawa': Japanese Maple Seeds

Zones: 5 to 8
Mature Height: 10 to 15 feet
Mature Spread: 15 to 20 feet

A red-tinged Japanese Maple with long seven-lobed leaves. New leaves emerge maroon and when fully open develop dark veins on a light yellow-green background. However, the leaf retains a strong pink/red overtone. Towards late season, the leaf tends to darken somewhat, developing greener tones. A hardy tree, but somewhat difficult to propagate. The name means 'red snipes over a winter marsh' in ancient Japanese. Also known as 'Beni shigitatsu', 'Samari', or 'Samurai'.

How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in hot water (120 degrees F) and let stand for 24-48 hours
Stratification: Warm stratify at room temperature for 60+ days, then cold stratify for not less than 60 days and up to 120 days
Germination: Sow seed 1/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
Other: Natural fall sowing in mulched beds (often preferred to artificial stratification)

Seed Count Per Packet:
This packet contains 15 hand-sorted, high-quality seeds.

If refrigerated upon receipt, these seeds can be stored for up to a year before you decide to use them.
