Comments
This group of hybrids resulted from a cross between M. kobus and M. stellata. The plants bloom in early spring but may turn brown when injured by late frost. The flowers are very fragrant and flowering begins when the plants are quite young. The plant may be grown in sun or shade. 

Cultivars 
'Ballerina' - A rounded tree with large white flowers flushed with pink. 

'Champaign' - A uniform, upright-oval habit, and pink tinted, white flowers. 

'Leonard Messel' - The flowers are pink to purple.

'Merrill' - The showy, 3-inch white flowers are borne in early spring.
