Needlecast

Needlecast (or needle cast) is a fungal disease that affects a variety of evergreen trees, including spruce and pine trees. Infected trees initially show small brown or black spots on new needle growth. The following spring, these spots become more pronounced, needles turn yellow and brown, and often drop mid-season.

Severely infected branches may die. The disease typically spreads from the base of the tree upward, with lower branches affected first. Trees with Needlecast exhibit slow growth and become more susceptible to other diseases and environmental stresses because the infection reduces the tree’s ability to perform photosynthesis.

Recommended Steps to Control Needlecast:

  • Promote Healthy Growth: Properly water and fertilize trees to maintain strong, vigorous growth. Use a TreeHelp Annual Care Kit for effective fertilization.

  • Pruning: Avoid pruning evergreen trees when they are damp or wet. Sanitize pruning tools after each branch to prevent spreading the disease.

  • Fungicide Treatment:

    • Prune severely infected branches.

    • Spray the tree in early spring with Fungi Max Multi-Purpose Fungicide.

    • For better results, mix the fungicide with Nature's Own Spray Helper.

    • Repeat the spray every 14 to 21 days, as needed.
