The Common Winterberry has dark green leaves in summer and bright red fruit in fall. Winterberry's bright red berries provide color in early winter after the leaves have fallen off making this tree quite vivid. The fruits are often eaten by birds. Rounded in shape. Also called the Michigan Holly.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Common Winterberry has a moderate growth rate. It grows up to 20 feet in height and 8 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 3 to 9. Full to partial sun and rich, well-drained soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Warm stratify for 60 days, cold stratify for 60 days
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed.
Other: Seedlings need shade for their first year, sporadic germination will occur over a 2-3 year period
