When a maple's branches die back one side at a time instead of the whole crown thinning evenly, verticillium wilt, also called maple wilt, is the most likely cause. Verticillium wilt is a disease caused by a soil-inhabiting fungus that clogs a tree's vascular system, so the damage typically shows up in a patchy, uneven pattern rather than spreading uniformly through the canopy.
Verticillium wilt, often called maple wilt, is a common disease caused by a soil-inhabiting fungus called Verticillium, most often Verticillium dahliae in maples. Once established in a tree, the fungus spreads through the vascular system, the network of tissue that moves water and nutrients from the roots to the branches and leaves. As fungal levels build up, that system becomes blocked, and the tree loses its ability to move water and nutrients where they are needed.
Verticillium wilt is caused by a fungus that lives in the soil and enters a maple tree through its roots or through wounds in the bark. The fungus can move between trees and planting sites in several ways:
Once inside the tree, the fungus spreads through the vascular tissue and gradually restricts the flow of water and nutrients.
The first sign of verticillium wilt is usually yellowing that turns to browning on the leaves at the ends of some branches, appearing in a spotty pattern rather than spreading evenly. As the disease progresses, several other symptoms tend to appear:
Maple branches die back unevenly because verticillium fungus blocks the vascular system branch by branch rather than all at once. Since water and nutrients travel through separate channels feeding different parts of the crown, one section can become starved of moisture while the rest of the tree still looks healthy. That is why the classic pattern of maple wilt is patchy dieback on one side or in scattered branches, not a uniform decline across the whole canopy.
There is no chemical control for verticillium wilt. Instead of eliminating the fungus, tree care for maple wilt focuses on helping the tree control or contain the spread of the disease and stay strong enough to keep growing around it. Three practices make the biggest difference: pruning, fertilizing, and watering.
Removing dead and infected wood correctly helps limit how much of the tree the fungus can affect. When pruning a maple with verticillium wilt:

Since drought makes verticillium wilt symptoms noticeably worse, giving an affected maple a deep root watering at least two to three times a week is one of the most effective things that can be done for it. The goal is to get water 24 to 36 inches into the soil so the entire root zone stays hydrated, which is best done by placing a sprinkler or soaker hose over the tree's drip line and letting it run for about two hours. Deep watering reaches the lower roots far better than frequent shallow watering does.
