Our Therapeutic Tree Fertilizer is a granular fertilizer for sick or struggling trees. It is high in potassium and phosphorus and low in nitrogen, and the nitrogen it does contain is in a controlled slow-release form, so it supports roots and wood instead of forcing a flush of soft new leaves.
1.5 kg bag. Treats one large tree or 2 to 3 smaller or newly planted trees. Made in the USA.
Many general tree fertilizers are high in quick-release nitrogen, which pushes fast, leafy growth that a weakened tree cannot support. Clemson Cooperative Extension notes that excessive nitrogen stimulates shoot growth and that overly lush growth is more vulnerable to cold, drought and pests. We formulated Therapeutic Fertilizer the other way around, with more potassium and phosphorus. It is designed to promote root development and slow, dense woody growth rather than a flush of new leaves.
It is meant for trees that are declining, recovering or under stress: an oak or maple that thinned out after drought, a magnolia slow to recover from disease, a birch hit by root damage from construction, or a recently transplanted tree. One bag treats one large tree, or two to three smaller or newly planted ones.
Apply the granules according to the directions on the bag, and water afterward so the nutrients reach the roots. Fertilizer only moves into the root zone through moist soil.
Find out why the tree is struggling first. Clemson Extension recommends a soil test or tissue analysis to show what the tree actually needs, advises against fertilizing drought-stressed trees in summer, and points out that fertilizer cannot fix roots damaged by insects, disease, drought or waterlogging. Treat those problems alongside feeding. If leaves are yellow between green veins, the cause is more likely iron or manganese deficiency, which calls for a targeted supplement instead.
