Choosing a fungicide for a tree depends on the disease being treated, whether contact or systemic protection is needed, and whether spraying, soil drenching, or trunk injection best fits the tree's size and location.
Identifying the disease first determines which category of fungicide is appropriate, since surface diseases and root or vascular diseases respond to different modes of treatment.
Surface diseases such as anthracnose, bacterial leaf spot, fire blight, apple scab, and powdery mildew are typically treated with a contact fungicide sprayed to thoroughly wet foliage and plant surfaces, such as Liquid Copper Fungicide Spray, which treats at least 5 to 6 large trees per pint on species including apples, arborvitae, cherries, citrus, dogwoods, magnolias, oaks, palms, pears, sycamores, and walnuts, and is reapplied every 7 to 14 days as needed, more often during heavy rain or severe disease pressure.
A contact fungicide remains on the surface it is sprayed onto and protects only the tissue it directly covers, while a systemic fungicide moves inside the plant to reach tissue the spray never touched, including roots.
Root and vascular diseases such as phytophthora, downy mildew, and pythium generally call for a systemic product capable of moving through plant tissue rather than sitting on the surface; Garden Phos Systemic Fungicide covers these conditions along with root rot, collar rot, crown rot, and fire blight on ornamentals, citrus, fruit and nut trees, vegetables, and turf, working as both a preventative and a curative treatment applied as a foliar spray every 14 to 21 days, a soil drench monthly, or a bare root dip. Getting a systemic product through bark rather than through soil or foliage requires a penetrating additive; Pentra Bark is a nonionic wetting agent added to a systemic fungicide for exactly that purpose, making a bark trunk spray possible instead of a foliar or soil application.

An organic-compatible option that still functions as a broad disease treatment is a biofungicide; Revitalize Bio Fungicide is labelled for blight, molds, rots, spots, and mildews on vegetables, fruits, nuts, ornamentals, lawns, houseplants, and tropical plants grown indoors or outside, with a label that allows use right up to the day of harvest.
Trunk injection is a better option than spraying when a tree is too large to cover thoroughly, when spray drift onto surrounding plants or people is a concern, or when treatment needs to be delivered directly into the tree's vascular system rather than through the bark.
Delivering treatment through micro-injection rather than through bark or foliage allows a product to reach the vascular system directly; Arborfos Fungicide uses this method, drilled into the trunk at chest height with capsules typically absorbed within several minutes. It is labelled for anthracnose, apple scab, bacterial blight, fire blight, sudden oak death, armillaria root rot, collar rot, foot rot, nut fall, and phytophthora species on conifers, ornamental, forest, and crop trees, working by triggering the tree's own natural defense system rather than adding fungicidal chemistry directly.
A few additional considerations narrow the choice once the disease and general treatment category are known:
A systemic fungicide such as Garden Phos Systemic Fungicide moves inside plant tissue and is labelled to work curatively on an established infection, while a contact fungicide mainly protects untreated tissue from new infection rather than reversing disease already inside the tree.
