Most evergreens with winter burn do recover, since the damage typically affects only the foliage rather than the buds or stems that produce new growth. Spring growth usually fills in the browned areas over a season or two, though how much of the plant needs to regrow depends on how severe the damage was.
Winter burn happens when foliage loses moisture through transpiration faster than the roots can replace it. On sunny or windy winter days, evergreen needles and leaves continue losing water to the air, but frozen ground prevents the roots from drawing up replacement moisture, leaving the foliage to dry out and brown.
Both broadleaf evergreens, such as holly, boxwood, and rhododendron, and needled evergreens, such as arborvitae, pine, spruce, and hemlock, are susceptible. Branches facing south, southwest, or into prevailing winter winds tend to show more damage than the sheltered side of the same plant, since that exposure increases moisture loss.
Affected foliage typically turns brown or bronze, often starting at the tips or margins before spreading. Damage frequently appears concentrated on one side of the plant, matching whichever side faced the most sun or wind exposure through winter, while the sheltered side may show little or no browning.
Recovery depends on whether the damage reached beyond the foliage. If only the needles or leaves browned while the buds and stems underneath remained alive, new spring growth typically fills in the damaged areas over the following season. If the cold was severe enough to kill buds or small stems as well, those specific branches experience dieback and won't regrow on their own.
Bending a small twig gently tests for flexibility, since a live branch bends without snapping while a dead one breaks cleanly.
