Tree seeds can be bought online from specialty seed sellers that ship species specific packets with germination instructions, such as TreeHelp's seed collection of more than 200 tree, shrub, and vine varieties. Good results come from ordering early enough to finish any stratification before the planned sowing date and refrigerating the seed as soon as it arrives.
Because many tree seeds need weeks or months of cold stratification, a moist chill that mimics winter, before they will sprout. The order date therefore sets the earliest sowing date, and a seed that needs 120 days of chill, ordered in spring, may not be ready to sow until late summer.
They are refrigerated right away unless they are being sown at once, since seeds refrigerated on receipt can be stored for up to a year. The germination instructions in each packet then set the order of soaking, stratification, and sowing.
By counting back from the sowing date by the species' stratification period. To have seedlings started by spring, Southern Magnolia Seeds ordered in early winter are soaked for 24 hours and then refrigerated for the 120 days they need. With only 30 days of cold required, Red Maple Seeds can arrive as late as early spring and still be chilled in time.
