The American Holly is pyramidal in habit with shiny yellow-green leaves. Bears 1/2-inch red berries which persist through winter. Commonly used as a decoration during the holidays. Suggested uses for this ornamental plant include as a hedge, screen, and specimen plant. Native to the eastern United States.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the American Holly has a growth rate. It grows up to 50 feet in height and 18 to 40 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 8. Prefers partial shade and moist soil. Requires good drainage and acid soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 12 hours
Stratification: Warm stratify for 60 days, cold stratify for 60 days
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed.
Other: Seedlings need shade for their first year, sporadic germination will occur over a 2-3 year period
