The American Linden (or Basswood) is a tall deciduous tree with dark green heart-shaped leaves and gray-brown bark. Often multi-trunked, fragrant yellow to tan 1/2-inch flowers favored by bees. Native to eastern North America. A great tree for providing dense shade or use as a lawn tree or in a naturalistic setting.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the American Linden has a moderate to fast growth rate. It grows up to 80 feet in height and 35 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 3 to 8. Prefers full sun to light shade and rich, moist soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: Sow seed 1/2 inch deep , tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, cover seedbed with some shade.
