Where and how the yellow appears is the main clue: yellow new leaves with green veins point to a nutrient problem such as iron chlorosis, even yellowing with wilting points to water or root stress, and yellowing with spots, stippling, or sticky residue points to insects or disease. Checking the pattern on the leaf and on the tree narrows the cause before anything is applied.
Because a leaf loses its green color whenever it runs short of nutrients or water, or when roots, pests, or disease interfere. TreeHelp's stress checklist lists nutrient shortages, drought, fungal or bacterial disease, and root damage as possible causes of the same yellowing.
Yellow tissue between green veins, starting on the youngest leaves. Iron chlorosis, an iron shortage, often follows soil pH above about 7.0, including lime leaching from new concrete, brick, or gravel. Releasing iron while adjusting soil pH so the tree can absorb it is how a TreeHelp Iron Spike works, placed in the ground around the tree at about one spike per 5 inches of trunk circumference.
It spreads more evenly and comes with other signs. Drought brings wilting, browned edges, and early leaf drop across the canopy, while soggy soil, pooling water, compacted ground, or a buried trunk flare point to roots that cannot work properly.
Marks that nutrient and water problems do not leave. Fine stippling suggests spider mites, sticky honeydew and distorted growth suggest aphids, and brown or black spots point to a leaf disease.
Usually 30 to 90 days for first results. The full effect normally shows the following growing season.
Manganese, if that is the shortage. Hammering TreeHelp Maple Tree Manganese Supplement Spikes into the ground around the tree and watering them in supplies it for up to 12 months, from 2 spikes for a 6 inch trunk to 10 for an 18 inch trunk.
Not always. Fall color is normal, but color that arrives early with leaves dropping ahead of schedule is listed among the signs of root stress.
Sometimes. Mildly yellowed leaves may regreen once the cause is corrected, but the clearest improvement usually appears in the next season's growth.
