In landscapes, junipers most often struggle because of where they are planted: outgrowing their space, browning near walks and lawns, thinning in shade, and declining in irrigated beds that stay wet. Cedar apple rust is another common issue where junipers grow near apple or crabapple trees.
Because many varieties mature far larger than they look at planting, and junipers rarely regrow from bare wood. Once a shrub crowds a walk or window, cutting it back past the green foliage leaves bare stubs, so the only lasting fix is often replacement with a smaller variety.
Usually from salt, pets, or equipment. Deicing salt splashed from pavement, repeated dog urine, and nicks from mowers and string trimmers all brown foliage or damage stems where junipers meet hardscape and turf.
To guard the lower trunk of a young upright juniper from trimmer and mower strikes, Tree Wrap is wound around the base where the equipment passes.
Because they need sun and fast drainage. In shade, growth turns sparse and the interior dies back, and lawn sprinklers that keep the soil constantly moist invite root rot, especially where mulch is piled against the stems.
Dwarf and low spreading types. Cultivars such as 'Blue Star' stay a few feet tall, and the mature size on the plant tag is the best guide.
Sometimes, if it is small. The browned foliage stays brown, but surrounding green shoots can grow over a small gap once the damage stops.
With care, because cedar apple rust passes between them. TreeHelp's guide to treating cedar apple rust on apple and juniper trees covers both hosts.
At least half its mature spread. That spacing keeps branches off siding and leaves room for air to move around the plant.
