Unique ornamental tree seeds can be matched to a garden's climate through specialty seed collections that give each species a hardiness zone, a rating of the winter cold a plant can survive. TreeHelp's seed listings each show the zone range, mature size, and germination steps.
Because a tree grown outside its zone range may not survive the winters there, however well its seed germinates. Many tree seeds also need cold stratification, a stretch of moist cold that breaks dormancy, which winter supplies when seed is sown outdoors in fall.
Japanese tree lilacs are hardy to zone 4 and blooms in large clusters of creamy white flowers. Soaking Japanese Tree Lilac Seeds for 24 hours, then giving them 60 days of warm and 60 days of cold stratification, starts a tree of about 30 feet with yellow fall color.
Southern magnolia, rated for zones 7 to 9, is an evergreen with fragrant white flowers 10 to 12 inches wide from May to July. After a 24 hour soak and 120 days of cold stratification, Southern Magnolia Seeds are covered with 1/4 inch of soil and mulched, and the tree can reach 80 feet.
Gardens in zones 5 to 8 can grow red leaved Japanese maples from seed. To let winter supply the 120 days of cold stratification it needs, Bloodgood Japanese Maple seed is tamped 1/8 inch deep into a mulched bed in fall for a 20 to 30 foot tree whose burgundy leaves turn scarlet.
On the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, which sorts areas by their average coldest winter temperature.
Yes. Because they need light to sprout, River Birch Seeds are surface sown on a mulched bed instead of being covered, and the tree is rated for zones 4 to 9.
No. The tree raised from Himalayan White Pine Seeds, for example, requires full sun and moist, well drained sandy loam and does not tolerate drought.
The seed listings don't give a timeframe. Flowering trees started from seed generally take several years to bloom, and large species such as magnolia often take longer.
