Leaf drop in a newly planted tree is most often a sign of transplant shock. The root system left after digging and transplanting is reduced compared to what the tree had in its original location, and it can't yet supply enough water to support the full canopy, so the tree sheds leaves to reduce water demand while the roots re-establish.
Digging a tree from the ground, especially with a balled-and-burlapped method, leaves behind the majority of the tree's fine root system, since only the roots within the dug root ball travel with the tree to its new location. This creates a mismatch between how much water the remaining roots can take up and how much the existing canopy of leaves still needs, and shedding some leaves is the tree's way of narrowing that gap until new roots grow in.
Underwatering and overwatering both cause leaf drop, through opposite mechanisms: too little water leaves the tree unable to meet its canopy's needs, while too much water saturates the root zone and deprives roots of the oxygen they need to function. Planting too deep, where the root flare ends up buried under soil, restricts oxygen and water uptake in a similar way to overwatering, even when the amount of water applied is otherwise appropriate. A sudden temperature swing shortly after planting, whether an unexpected heat spell or a cold snap, can also trigger leaf drop as the tree responds to stress it hasn't yet adapted to.
Underwatering typically shows as dry, crisp, or curling leaves alongside soil that feels dry several inches down. Overwatering tends to show as yellowing or mushy leaves, along with soil that stays consistently wet or waterlogged between waterings. Checking the soil moisture directly, rather than relying on the leaf symptoms alone, is the most reliable way to tell the two apart, since both can produce leaf drop that looks similar at first glance.

Reducing the amount of water lost through the remaining leaves, alongside supporting the roots directly, works on both sides of the water balance that transplant shock disrupts.

Recovery time varies with tree size and how much of the root system was lost during digging, but many trees show renewed leaf growth within the same growing season or by the following spring. Larger trees with a greater root-to-canopy imbalance at planting can take a full growing season or more to fully re-establish.
Heavy fertilizing, especially with a high-nitrogen product, is generally not the first response to transplant-related leaf drop, since the limiting factor is usually water uptake capacity rather than a lack of nutrients. Supporting root development and consistent moisture addresses the underlying cause more directly than an early fertilizer application.
Planting during hot summer weather increases water demand on the canopy at the exact time the root system is least able to meet it, raising the likelihood of leaf drop. Cooler planting windows in early spring or fall generally place less immediate stress on a newly reduced root system.
Some leaf drop can still occur even with appropriate watering, since the root system takes time to rebuild regardless of how well it's supported in the meantime. Consistent care through the establishment period reduces the severity and speeds recovery, even when it doesn't prevent some leaf drop entirely.
