The Red Mulberry is the only mulberry native to North America. Leaves are similar to the White Mulberry, but the top of is rough to the touch, while the underside is hairy. They can measure up to 6 inches long and can be deeply lobed or heart-shaped. The bark is dark and scaly. The fruit (similar to a blackberry) is edible and is often used to make jams and jellies.  Birds and other wildlife also feed on the fruit.

Light: Partial to full sun
Moisture: Tolerates drought and flood
Soil Type: Almost any soil will do, but prefers moist, well-drained soils

Care
Due to its weak wood, prune to shorten branches and avoid fertilization with high amounts of quick-release Nitrogen. 

Problems
Susceptible to leaf scorch.  Slime flux and bacterial blight can be become problems. Is attacked by scale insects (treat with Horticultural Oil Insect Spray).
