Native to the eastern half of the US, the Black Gum has dark green shiny leathery leaves to 5"; dark blue fruit, to 1/2"; valued timber trees; of upright, pyramidal form in its youth then becomes rounded; grows in swamps and damp areas; fall color reliably splendid, brilliant orange, purple, yellow, and red, among the earliest to color; "an excellent ornamental tree" (Wyman); "one of our most beautiful native trees" (Dirr); native to eastern U.S.

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: Sow seed 3/4 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed
